So this weekend I finally had a little bit of downtime to get some things done around the house and focus on me. And, after the week I had (elections with the sorority, insane amounts of school work, and drama at my job), I needed some time to get back to the things I like to do.
About a week or so ago, I set a mental goal of doing as much DIY decorating for the holidays as I could. And, since we’ve been getting the new holiday Crate and Barrel and PotteryBarn catalogs, I’ve been pretty inspired to make various things (because while this kissing ball is nice:
I can’t justify spending $40 on it. And, it’s not reusable, unless I learn the fine art of drying. Source)
So I set out to Michael’s yesterday to get supplies for a different project (which I didn’t end up buying anything for – it’ll require more time researching first) and ended up with a stuffed hand-basket full of flower foam, pine, eucalyptus, ivy, and other decorative things. The store I visited had a cute little topiary on their floral arranging desk of a lighted Christmas tree, decorated with cardinals, fruits, and a variety of other greenery. While I knew I wouldn’t be able to replicate it in its entirety, I set out to make one as close as I could.
I should’ve done a tutorial, but I didn’t think about it until I had all of the pine in… oops!
But here’s my result:
All from scratch, which included cutting the pine branches off (thanks to S for being a great sport and helping me!), sticking them in, propping up the styrofoam cone to get it as straight as possible, and stringing the lights. The picture doesn’t do it justice at all. I can’t wait to have it sitting upstairs (where yet is TBD)!!
I started to work on the kissing ball, but didn’t get nearly as far, as it was getting late. And, thanks to my mom’s suggestion, I now have a little crafting area set up in the basement:
I may eventually move this up into our office, but there’s not enough room up there right now. So for now, I have my own little space to escape to and take out my frustrations.
